So the point is: do it when you can actually dump enough skill points into your main skill and necessary synergies, to not screw up your character's power. Maybe even sit on an unused skillpoint because you can't put it into any skill you need yet until you level up. But if you're a lvl18 Paladin wanting to be a Hammerdin, who just unlocked Blessed Hammer, you can't even put more than 1 skill point into it.
